2015 MELITA HUME POETRY PRIZE SHORTLIST FOCUS: MARIA APICHELLA

SHE NOW TEACHES WRITING
 Maria Apichella (pictured above) has completed her PhD in English and Creative Writing at Aberystwyth in Wales. She now teaches writing with the University of Maryland, Europe.

Widely published in poetry journals and anthologies, her pamphlet Paga was a winner of the Cinnamon Press Pamphlet competition 2014. This poem is from her short-listed manuscript Psalmody.

That morning
he knocked a jar over.
Toast-flecked honey inched
across the breakfast table
like dense sunlight;
anyone else would have scooped it back in,
ashamed to waste
in a gnawed up world.
Yet he let it spill,
washed out the jar
poured in new amber
a slow coming sweetness,
a kiss.
